RCSB PDB Vision and Mission

To expand the frontiers of fundamental biology, biomedicine, energy sciences, and biotechnology through open and sustainable access to 3D biostructure information stored in the Protein Data Bank (PDB) archive and generated using artificial intelligence/machine complemented with functional and evolutionary insights from trusted external resources.


To support the needs of diverse, evolving User communities spanning Fundamental Biology and Biochemistry; Biomedicine and Drug Discovery; Energy Sciences; Bioengineering/Biotechnology; and Computer Science through RCSB PDB services:

  1. Deposition/Biocuration: Providing efficient resources for collection, validation, and biocuration of 3D biostructures in collaboration with the Worldwide PDB partnership;
  2. Archive Management/Access: Enabling open access to PDB data following best practices for data standards, integration, and delivery;
  3. Data Exploration: Advancing basic and applied research through user-focused query, visualization, and analysis of PDB data alongside related biological content; and
  4. Training, Outreach, and Education: Building and supporting the broad PDB user community with a wide range of resources for understanding 3D biostructures.

IT Infrastructure (Service 0) Supports all RCSB PDB Services and systems by establishing policies and processes to ensure standardized systems configurations and management, redundancy, security, high availability, and disaster recovery.

All services follow the data stewardship principles of FAIR (data are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and FACT (FAIR, Accurate, Confidential, and Transparent).
